Paradise Inn at Sunway Pyramid

DSC_9327
A new restaurant is in town.

I know what you're thinking. Paradise Inn? Yes, its a restaurant and no, it is not an inn. I was told that Paradise Inn was introduced into Malaysia by Paradise Group Holdings Pte. Ltd, a Singapore based restaurant group. The design of the restaurant is quite intriguing and I can't wait to try the food.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by the waiters and waitresses, well, in Mandarin. It's not that I mind because most places would have greeted in Cantonese so it felt quite refreshing to me. Why do I say so? I came from Johor so most of the people there would speak in Mandarin, Teochew or Hokkien. I think its a nice and relaxing touch, after all, its a restaurant that serves awesome Chinese cuisines. I also noticed that Paradise Inn's specialty is their traditional double-boiled soups and tea house concept where they have herbs, floral and fruit infused tea.

Very Berries Iced Tea, RM8.80

As I have just recovered from my cough and flu, I thought some berry drink with all the natural antioxidants would do me some good so I went ahead with this Very Berries Iced Tea. I'm glad I have made the right choice of ordering it. I like the balance of sweetness of the berries while I could still savor flavors of the Earl Grey tea.

Jasmine, Osmanthus, Dried Longan and Chrysanthemum, RM6.80 per person

My good friend Evelyn ordered this. It was amazing. Despite the different types of aromatic flowers used, it feels light yet so rich and fragrant. Another cool thing to note is that the menu at Paradise Inn will explain to you you benefits of the tea that you're drinking. In this case, this tea nourishes your heart and spleen, strengthens eyesight and improves your immune system.

Stewed Eggplant with Minced Pork and Salted Fish in Claypot, RM16(S), RM24(M), RM32(L)

First dish to start off our night! Combination of minced pork with salted fish is always welcomed at any time. I really like how the eggplant absorbed all the flavors and sweetness from the minced pork while the salted fish kicked up the aroma up a notch.

Crisp-fried Fish with Preserved Bean Paste, RM12.90

Looks can be deceiving eh? Most of us thought this was chicken until we were told that these were fish. Fresh fish fried till crispy in a light bean paste batter.

DSC_9279
Coffee Pork Ribs, RM19.90(S), RM29.90(M), RM39.90(L)

Ribs? Yea, these are deboned ribs, glazed with a special coffee infused sauce. The ribs were kinda sweet but it also has a subtle hint of coffee flavor which adds a nice fragrant touch to it. Pork lovers, this is a MUST TRY.

Poached Chinese Spinach with Egg Trio and Minced Pork in Superior Stock, RM16(S), RM24(M), RM32(L)

I'm not really a big fan of spinach as I prefer vegetables with a crunchy texture but this dish was just too hard to resist. I mean, combination of 3 types of eggs and minced pork? What's not to like? Whenever there is a combination of century, salted and regular eggs, you know you're in for a treat.

DSC_9285
Crisp-fried Crystal Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk, RM29.90, RM49.90(m), RM59.90(L)

As they say, a picture tells a thousand words. Look at those succulent prawns covered in salted egg yolks. Springy texture of the prawns coated with salted egg yolks gives it a little creamy and rough texture with every bite. I really like the fusion of both ingredients as it tasted really good.

DSC_9286
Sliced Tea-Smoked Duck, RM12.90

I love the way this dish was presented. I LOVE duck and the flavors coming the duck was spot on! I mean look at the meat and fat ratio per slice? Be sure to take the time to savor this as tea smoked duck are not to be found any where easily right? Unless I've been missing out but anyway.

Supreme Seafood Fried Rice, RM19.90(s), RM29.90(m), RM39.90(L)

The seafood fried rice feels homely. As you can see, there is nothing pretentious about it. A little similar to the one I had at Hee Lai Ton but I feel that the one at Paradise Inn is simpler. Fresh prawns and scallops gives it a nice springy texture with each mouthful.

Crisp-fried Crystal Prawns with Wasabi Mayo Sauce, RM29.90, RM49.90(m), RM59.90(L)

We were jokingly told to have this at the end of everything(but before dessert) just to be safe. To be honest, it wasn't THAT spicy till the point where you feel like your nostrils just cleared itself. In fact, it was appetizing! As you know, wasabi is extremely spicy but the mayo mixture helped to tone it down a little and adding that sweet and creamy texture to coat over the prawns.

Stewed Pork Belly. I'm loving the awesome glossy reflection on these awesome pork belly

DSC_9300
RM4.80 per piece.

This my friend, is heaven. May be I'm exaggerating but I personally love this type dish. The braised pork belly wasn't soft enough for that "melt-in-your mouth" texture when you bite it but seriously, for the taste, I wouldn't mind one bit. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't tough till you have break a sweat to chew but normally, one would expect the texture to be quite tender. The bun was fragrant till you may even eat it on its own. As you can see that is the setup for this dish is simple. Open up the bun, place a slice of that awesome braised pork belly and finally, add a small piece of lettuce; Bon Appétit

Crisp-fried Shrimp Paste Chicken, RM18(s), RM27(m), RM36(L)

I haven't tried Shrimp Paste chicken before. I remember the taste being a little tangy and sourish(just a little). All in all, quite savory actually. As mentioned by Evelyn, this would be a good "starter" for kids to settle down before their main course; I kinda agree as kids are restless these days!

DSC_9315
Braised Tofu  with Crystal Prawns, RM25(s), RM37.50(M), RM50(L)

This dish needs no introduction. Although it's typical in most Chinese restaurants, the one here is pretty good. I like the slightly charred areas of the bean curd surface. Lightly fried on the outside while the inside of the bean curd was silky smooth.

Braised Vermicelli with Pork Trotters, RM19.90(s), RM29.90(m), RM39.90(L)

DSC_9314

The Lord blessed us with another heavenly porky dish. Be warn though, the porky smell might be a little strong and pungent for some but for me, I enjoyed it. The thick gravy was so flavorful of the braised pork trotter, I had almost 3 servings of the noodles by itself. I initially thought it was glass noodles due to the shininess.

I think vermicelli was a good choice because you don't want the entire dish to be too filling as the gravy itself was already very rich in flavor. The only downside I find about this dish is that it was a little oily(as you can tell from the picture) but hey, what were you expecting when ordering this, right? Enjoy yourself and work off the calories later!

Actually, for our review, only 2 types of signature soups were served. The 4 claypots are here because there were 2 tables

Double-boiled Water Goby with Spare Ribs and Fresh Apple, RM39.90 per pot

DSC_9313
Double-boiled Sea Whelk  with Spare Ribs and Chinese Yam, RM39.90 per pot

What is double boiling you say? Here is a snippet from wikipedia:

Double steaming, sometimes also dubbed double boiling, is a Chinese cooking techniques to prepare delicate food such as bird nests, shark fins, etc. The food is covered with water and put in a covered ceramic jar and the jar is then steamed for several hours. This technique ensures there is no loss of liquid or moisture (its essences) from the food being cooked, hence it is often used with expensive ingredients like Chinese herbal medicines.

Basically, its to seal in all the essence and goodness of the ingredients during the cooking process. After tasting both of the soup, the flavors were wholesome and rich; giving you that warm and homely feel. The soup was really fragrant because of the healthy combination of herbs and ingredients.

As mentioned before, the menu will explain benefits of certain drinks and soups so here are the benefits for these soups.
  • Double-boiled Water Goby with Spare Ribs and Fresh Apple: Reduces internal dryness, relieves thirst and improves metabolism
  • Double-boiled Sea Whelk  with Spare Ribs and Chinese Yam: Improves eyesight, maintains youthfulness, nourishes lungs and kidneys
With all of the signature dishes done, it was time for dessert. To be honest, I was pretty full at this point. I have to thank the braised pork trotter with vermicelli and seafood fried rice for this; I'm quite a 'ricey' person.

Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Lemonade (chilled), RM6 per bowl

I kept telling others how I don't fancy this dessert at most places but after trying it, I was taken aback. The flavors were perfectly balanced! There was enough sweetness from the jelly while the sourness and fragrant aromas from the lemonade and lemongrass helped to re-open up my appetite for more desserts!

DSC_9321
Mango Sago(chilled), RM8 per bowl

This is a sweet tooth delight! The mango pudding had lots of sago, topped with some pamelo pulps, and a slice of mango. Really refreshing.

Double-boil Hashima with Red Dates and Dried Longan(warm/chilled), RM12 per bowl

Ah Balling(2 pieces) with Red Bean Sago(warm), RM6 per bowl

Here comes the part of my review where I would conclude my food review with seemingly good words. As mentioned before, my review is HONEST and all I can say is, Paradise Inn has really proved that good food will speak for itself.

Nothing is perfect but the signature dishes were splendid and it feels quite homely. My personal favorites are the prawns with salted egg yolk, Stewed Pork Belly with Lotus bun and Braised Vermicelli with Pork Trotters.

The double-boiled soup here is also not to be missed and I highly recommend it for you guys to try. Not only is it delicious and wholesome but it is also good for nourishing the body. Home cooked soup is not too far away eh?

All in all, I enjoyed most of the dishes as they were really good in my humble opinion. I will definitely bring my loved ones here some time soon because they enjoy such authentic Chinese cuisines.
