Brotzeit - German Bier, Bar and Restaurant
Sometimes a good drink is a well deserved reward after a hard day's work. Better yet, combine that with some authentic German food and beer. That would probably make Friday not too far away.
Brotzeit is located at Mid Valley Megamall and this place is definitely gaining popularity from being an after work hang out to casual social networking place. Apart from the simple and relaxing ambiance, this place serves some seriously delicious Bavarian food and a wide variety of German beer. By the way, its Bavarian, not barbarian.
Taken from German Food Guide:
"Bavarian cooking is hearty and rustic, making very simple ingredients into tasty, satisfying dishes. It is known for its wide variety of wurst (sausages), meat dishes, Knödel (dumplings) and pasta dishes, as well as for its breads, its sweet dishes and its dessert."
Beer, delicious rustic german food, what's not to like?
There were many friends present for the food review but things went pretty well despite the large number. If only I got my SB700(flash gun) earlier. My set of photos for this food review is kinda bad because of the lighting and I've got myself to blame. However, I bought SB700 on that very same week; at long last.
Brozeit Brettl, RM82
German bread
Definitely an eye catcher. Fresh cold cuts of black forest ham, hunter sausage, smoked chicken ham, obatzda cheese, mild green peppers and gerkins served on a wooden board. Very fresh and you could savor each of the different cold cuts individually without adding any sauce even though it came with it. This platter is also served along with some slices of German bread.
Mozzarella Salat
Mixed salad with mozzarella cheese, vine ripened and semi-dried tomatoes, grilled zucchini, olives, pesto sauce and garlic croutons tossed with house dressing. The semi-dried tomatoes and mozzarella cheese brings out so much flavor in the salad. Not forgetting the garlic croutons for that added crunchy and fragrant aroma.
Salat mit Wurst
Mixed salad with the best of our julienne cold cuts, emmenthaler cheese, mixed bell peppers, gherkins, boiled eggs, onions and sour cream. If you like your salad with some meat, this would do you good with their generous amount of cold cut and house dressing.
Brotzeitflade Bayern, RM32
Thin crust fladenbrot with tomatoes, black forest ham, leg ham, mild green peppers, cocktail onions, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. The common problem with thin crust pizza is either its too dry or lack of cheese. This is the second thin crust pizza I'm having at Brotzeit with Spicy Bacon Pizza being the first. One thing I noticed is the consistency of their thin crust pizza which is really well made; It's not a huge piece of biscuit and you're really enjoying a "thin crust pizza" with lots of toppings and cheese.
Schweinershaxe, RM85
Oven roasted crispy pork knuckle served with Sauerkraut and potato salad. This made my day. One of the must have at Brotzeit! Crispy and golden brown on the outside but tender on the inside for the most part. It might be a little dry at some parts but that is where the brown sauce does its magic. A perfect combo along side with the sauerkraut.
Würstelplatte, RM78
Authentic sausage platter with spicy chicken sausages, Nürnberger pork bratwurst, mini pork-beef cheese sausages, weisswurst sausage and garlic sausage with sauerkraut and mustard. For first timers, I would highly recommend this. This is like sausages of the round table! Biting through the sausage's casing releases the sausages' flavors. What you're eating is real meat fillings and not some meat and mix match of flour filling ratio.
Käsespätzle, RM34
Bavarian specialty made of homemade spätzle with assorted melted cheeses. Its kinda like macaroni and cheese but the assortment of cheese really made this a special one. The taste is a little hard to describe but I can tell you that its really fragrant, a little milky and the melted cheese is thick and creamy because of the combination of cheese(which even the menu did not disclose).
Schweinemedallions, RM44
Grilled pork fillet medallions wrapped in smoked bacon served with fries and sautéed mixed vegetables. These are a real gem. Even reading the description made me drool. Imagine good cuts pork fillet, grilled and wrapped in smoked bacon. When it comes to pork and bacon, seasoning is important. A mix of natural sweetness from the pork fillet while the smoked bacon adds a little smoky and salty flavor. Thankfully, it wasn't overly salty; it was just the right touch.
The next dish is not available on the menu but it was for us to try; yeah, we're lucky :P
Pork Ribs
Juicy and tender pork ribs. No sauce was even required to enjoy this; pure bliss.
Kartoffelhappen, RM11
Spicy potato wedges. The wedges were seasoned nicely without being too spicy or salty. Crunchy on the outside but soft and warm in the inside; a rustic feel with a tad of spiciness. A good side order if you're there for a light meal.
The next few dishes are part of their lunch menu which are available on Monday till Saturday, 11.00am till 3.00pm.
Bavarian meat loaf sandwich, RM12
Grilled meat loaf in Ciabatta bread served with Bavarian coleslaw. A tasty light meal especially the combination of pickle with the meatloaf.
Lumberjack Steak, RM13
Pork collar steak with fried onions, potato wedges and Bavarian coleslaw. A balance of meat, carbs and veggies on the go.
Boiled Ham Sandwich, RM12
Mouth-watering boiled ham slices with 2 fried eggs on multicorn bread served with fries. I would call this German breakfast on my own.Oh and by the way, you don't see the bread because the bread was totally covered by the ham.
Time to cool it off with some desserts! Here are some awesome desserts featuring one of Chef Helmut's specialty!
Apfelstrudel, RM22
Apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. Chewing through layers of pastry reveals very fragrant apple filling. The pastry was also not too thick which is an important criteria in making good apple strudel.
Kaiserschmarrn, RM20
Shredded pancake with rum and raisins served with plum sauce on the side. The shredded pancakes were really soft and fluffy and fragrant. Though it can do without the plum sauce but go ahead and indulge yourself with this tasty dessert.
Bayerische Crème, RM12
Bavarian vanilla cream with chocolate sauce and almonds. A popular German dessert and the custard tasted really good with the chocolate sauce without being too sweet.
Chef's Creation
Brotzeit’s signature dessert; vanilla ice cream drizzled with pumpkin seed oil topped with almond flakes created by Chef Helmut Murmann.
Me and Chef Helmut Murmann
You've seen some of the main dishes and desserts, its time to introduce some awesome German beer.
From top to bottom, left to right: Thurn and Taxis Pilsener, 111 Hefe Flaschl Weisse, Hopf Ice Wheat and Paulaner Salvator
From top to bottom, left to right: Hopf Special Wheatbock, Thurn and Taxis Roggen(Rye) Beer, Hacker-Pschorr Anno 1417, Hacker-Pschorr Sternweisse, Hacker-Pschorr Münchener Gold and lastly, Johann Auer Rosenheimer Dunkle Weiße.
If you're on your own, my top 3 recommendation would either be the Spicy Bacon Pizza, Würstelplatte(Sausage platter) or Käsespätzle(similiar to macaroni and cheese). Too many awesome selection to choose from but one of these would be my pick when I'm on my own.
As for beer...
....the ONE and only, Paulaner.
Last but not least, thanks to Jason for the food tasting invite as well as the people at Brotzeit for the amazing food and hospitality.
