Cooking 101 is back! This time, I'll be making popiah. Not tedious but it did take longer because I was taking photographs. Bought all the necessary ingredients from the market although it was kinda last minute. Here we go!
Ingredients:
- Sweet sauce
- 2 eggs(Its up to you really)
- French beans
- Chicken breast
- Jicama (mengkuang in Malay)
- Carrots
- Lettuce
- Tofu(beancurd)
- Rice sheets
- Garlic
- Shallots
Wash the jicama / bangkuang
Peel both carrots and jicama
My task of shredding the jicama and carrots
Uh, couldn't find the container so which ever works
Last few bits were too hard to hold and shred so I just chopped them up.
Done with the carrots
Slice the tofu
Lightly pan fry them
Wash up the vegetables
Prepping the chicken breast
Boiled the chicken breast with some salt
Once cooled, I shredded them
Chop up the garlic and shallots. Beat up the eggs in a small bowl
Fry the shallots till golden brown
This will add so much aroma
Fry the eggs
All of the vegetables ready to be cooked
Toss everything in and stir, stir, stir and stir. Added some salt, pepper and sesame oil.
Everything is set!
Becareful when removing a sheet from the whole stack
Lay it out nice and flat
Add the sweet sauce
Add some chili(I used Kampung Koh Chilli sauce here)
A piece of lettuce
Add the tofu(beancurd)
Next will be the eggs
Chicken breast for the meat
Add the fried vegetables as the main filling
Finally, add the fried shallots
Wrap it up and you have your home made popiah!
Slice them up
Check that out
Which one should I take?
It took some time to prepare and cook the popiah but me and my wife were pretty satisfied with the outcome. The size of the popiah was a little too big. We should have sliced the lettuce instead of using one whole piece. I also forgot to get some parsley for that fresh fragrant aroma. Also, we cooked too much jicama; 1 jicama was more than enough.
Nevertheless, it was delicious!

Yosh! Itadakimasu!
Looks great. The step-by-step pictures are really helpful, i think in malay the jicama is called sengkuang..hehe anyway thanks for sharing such a healthy recipe..i can try it now or then as i'm always running out of cooking ideas..
